Collective thoughts going for the greater good could have helped in evolution, on micro society levels, I'm pretty sure that has helped a lot to create a peaceful society, on the macro level it has too often been used to justifying invasions.
I am an atheist, however, I do believe in personal enrichment through some sort of spiritual affiliation or identity, that is trying to make life better than it already is, for as many ppl as possible.
