I'm sad that some kid died. But, honestly there's a ton of difference between a world famous 6' 7" ex basketball player and some 21 yo kid that decided it would be smarter to go for his schooling in the far east, than in the U.S.

He really really shouldn't have been so dumb to mess with their shit. The only way in is through travel organizations in China and they explicitly tell you all this stuff to make sure you don't break the rules. And yes, this guy was probably sent to prison cause he's an American. If it was a Chinese or EU man, he likely would have just been banished from the country. But that's also part of the awareness part. You should know that if you're an American you need to watch your shit more in certain countries (Iran, NK, etc).
