there's no doubt that the show's intention was to have viewers immediately think of Hopper as soon as we hear the guards say "the American". But there is also some intentional ambiguity there.
Why would a show drag out a long "death scene" only to confirm right after the credits that the death was fake? It harms the narrative way greatly.
After reading a little fan discussion, it seemed more likely that Hopper was the "all-too-obvious red herring". I still hope that that is the case and that this teaser was simply more misdirection. Regardless, it is disappointing that it dampened the fan speculation that had been rampant since the end of last season.
