Oilers Cap Update: 2018-2019 at $13.5mil..

So by now I'm sure you've all heard the rumors of $13.5mil over 8 for McDavid.. Here's how it affects the cap (at a cap of $77mil). And if Drai gets his 9.8mil offer sheet. If it's less, adjust accordingly.

Maroon ($3mil) - McDavid ($13.5mil) - Yamamoto ($925k)
Lucic ($6mil) - Draisaitl ($9.8mil) - JP ($2mil)
Caggiula ($2.5mil) - Strome ($3.5mil) - Kassian ($2mil)
Khaira (925k) - Letestu ($1.5mil) - Slepyshev ($1.5mil)
[Spare forward: 800k]

Forwards: $45.65mil

Klefbom ($4.1mil) - Larsson ($4.1mil)
Nurse ($3mil) - Benning ($3mil)
Russell ($4mil) - Bear (925k)
Gryba (900k)

Defense: $20mil

Talbot: ($4.1mil)
LB: ($1mil)

Total cost: $73 million (with up to $5mil in bonuses)

Total cap cost possible: $78mil

So, as we can see, if we get rid of Sekera (and bypass his NMC), if we get rid of RNH (and his $6mil), and go with some rookies and get the rest signed, and use Bear, we have approx. $4mil (or $6mil if the cap goes up another $2mil).

Talbot will cost another $2mil the next season, hopefully that's covered by the cap increase.

So, as we sit, we can roughly say we have $4mil in cap space to work with as a relatively safe bet.

(1) Can we keep RNH? As of the offer sheet to Draisaitl, no.

(2) Can we be ok if we can't move Sekera? As of the offer sheet to Draisaitl, no, unless we unload Russell instead.

(3) Can we add any players? As of the offer sheet to Draisaitl, no.

The safe bet here, since PC won't want to be so brutally tight on the cap, is that RNH and Sekera both get moved, however he can, so that the roster sits at approx. $73mil, with up to $4mil to use on a 1RW or a 2RHD (or both) depending on what pieces he gets in a deal (unless bonuses kick us hard)

In short, no, the Oilers aren't screwed, but we're probably losing those other two guys for cheaper internal (or trade) options in order to maintain some cap flexibility (and deal with any bonuses for Bear and Yamamoto.

Take this as a pretty good idea of what our 2018/2019 roster will look like based on the latest numbers folks. It's a good roster (and young), but no more RNH and Sekera.

You have to understand. Percentage of cap wise, he's getting paid the same % as Crosby did when he signed in 08 at $8.7mil, I don't remember everyone up on arms over that.

It might hurt now. Just maybe. But in a few years we'll be fine.

It did take them 6 years of draft picks to recover

This is true kinda , when Crosby signed at the same point in his career as macdavid the cap % was the same. When crosbys contract actually kicked in the cap had gone up 6 mil in that 1 year. For the same % to apply to 97 the cap would have to go up 11 mil after this coming season.

we can be ok for next year if we manage to ditch 67's 4 mil.

Moving sekara and getting a cheaper replacement and hope nurse can fill his void would be ideal but unrealistic.

Moving Hopkins for a salary (and one ice) downgrade + picks seems likely next off season.

Maroon will have to choose between being 97's winger ,scoring 25 goals and getting under 3mil. Or getting 5mil or something ridiculous and going back to being a 10 goal 3rd liner.

Of course it's all speculation on how benning , nurse , pitlick , puljarvi actually perform.

Gotta add it's highly unlikely we will see Yamamoto that soon , far more likely it's pitlick assuming he stays healthy.

Didn't know that. Too bad, he had good chemistry last year before his injury.

Guess I can't blame him when he knows even if he stays healthy and puts up 20 or more goals the best $ he could get is 2 mil lol.

What is this you speak of about Drasaitl getting a 9.8 mil offer sheet?

Have heard nothing of this.

Are there rumours of teams making predatory offer sheets to try to scoop him up and the Oilers will match that offer, if that is the case?

iso some info
