It’s definitely a risk , not paying him on what he’s proven.
Paying him based on what Holland hopes he can do and it’s now or never.
Our past GM’s ( and Holland to some degree ) have done a lot of things looking in the rearview mirror at players. Paying guys about to fall off a career cliff for what they have done not what can be expected to going forward.

I’m not enthusiastic about this but in this case I don’t there was a better option other than sitting by and doing nothing which is far worse
