african = born in africa
american = born in america
african american = born in africa, gained citizenship in america
even if you take out family origin 5-10 generations back to invalidate "african american" as a term there still very much is such a thing as an african american.
African-American is a political designation created by Jesse Jackson in a speech in the 1970s. It is a thing. Of course racist forces try to undermine black identity.

There is no such thing as African-American. There are Africans, and Americans. If you were born in the US you're an American. If you were born in Africa, you're an African. It's not rocket science.
Read about dual consciousness in The Souls of Black Folks by WEB DuBois and become educated about this issue. Or just be another entitled white man defining black identity in your own way. You choose.
