1. Resistances
Resistances act as a form of damage reduction in a manner of speaking, although this nice quality can be reversed as well. The damage you receive will get reduced by the amount of resistances you have of the respective damage type. 100 fire damage with 50% fire resistances results in only taking 50 fire damage, although if you have negative resistances it will result in an increase of damage taken. With -50 fire resist and 100 damage the fire will deal 150 damage instead of 100.

2. What can be resisted?
I will make this short and simple with a list.
Fire, light, cold, poison, physical, and magic damage can all be resisted.


3. Damage reduction%
Damage reduction acts as a form of physical resistance, although monsters can spawn with this kind of resistance, players do not although it is still there, so it is enhanceable through items with Damage Reduction% items such as Stormshield, or armor types with the rune "ber" in it.

4. Damage reduction % vs Integer damage reduction
Unlike it's counterpart damage reduction %, integer damage reduction(Damage reducted by xx) has no limit or upper cap. It is simply limited to equipment slots.
Integer damage reduction is a staight reduction of the last bit of damage before it hits your health. An attack from another player of 600 physical damage, after pvp penalty/50% damage reduction it comes out to be around 50. Now with damage reduction xx, it would be a straight subtraction. So Damage reduced by 5, would make the attack only 45 damage. Lower damages are better countered with integer reduction because sometimes it can yield greater results than reduction %.

5. Absorb% & Integer Absorb
Absorb is a very special property. It acts different than resistances in one way but alike in another way. Percentage absorb% is hard coded to a 40% upper limit, although integer absorb has no limit, other than equipment slots.
Absorbtion will first reduce the amount of specified damage of the element(Without taking damage yet), then the user recieves that amount of absorbed damage in the form of life, and then what was not absorbed goes to damage.
Although, if the user is at full health nothing is gained and absorb will act as a form of resistance.
Sometimes integer absorb can yield greater results than percentage absorb depending on how high the damage is. Lower damage is usually better off with integer, high amounts of damage are obviously left with percentage absorb.

6. Magic damage reduced
Magic damage reduction is a straight amount of reduction that reduces fire, cold, light, and magic damage.


7. The overflow mechanic

An interesting glitch affects the combination of MDR and PDR if small values of damage should be applied. If in damage order the elemental damage result up to the point where MDR and PDR step in is smaller than PDR's value, PDR will set this elemental part to zero. 'Elemental' is here Cold, Fire, Lightning and Magic Damage.

Okay, you have two choices. You can either believe me when I tell you that MDR will sometimes stack with PDR… or you can read on for the whole technical explanation behind it. Still with me? Okay, here we go. There’s this little thing in the game called the “PDR/MDR Overflow Mechanic”. We’re all pretty sure that it’s a bug, but as long as it exists and it isn’t game-breaking, we might as well benefit from it. A good thread about the topic can be found here. Anyway, the quick and easy explanation is that if you have TOO MUCH PDR OR MDR, then the extra will “overflow” until the end of the damage application equation and negate other types of damage.

An example. Let’s say you have 20 PDR, 0 MDR, and get hit by an attack that deals 10 physical and 10 fire damage.

Step 1: Reduce the physical damage by PDR. You’re now taking -10 physical damage.
Step 2: Reduce the elemental damage by MDR. You’re now taking 10 fire damage.
Step 3: Add together all the damage. You’re now taking 0 damage.

See that? The excess PDR managed to negate an attack normally reserved for MDR. Neat, huh?




8. What affects resistances?
Items with +/- resistances affects your resistances and other monsters with the exception of immunities, -resistances from an item cannot break an immunity of a monster. Passive auras such as Salvation, resist lightning, resist cold, resist fire, conviction, amplify damage, and decrepify also can affect resistances. Also the other skills such as, Fade, lower resist and natural resistances can help as well. Each difficulty has a resistance penalty as stated below in a lower section.


9. +Maximum resistances
Items with this property do exactly as it says. It increases your maximum resistance limit of the respective resistance type. This is capped at 95% for players for all resistances. An item with +5% maximum fire resist will raise the cap from 75% standard to 80% max cap, although like stated above maximum resistances may not go higher then 95%.



10. Stacking resistances
What is it? - Stacking resistances is when you have more resistances then you cap, these resistances will normally not come into play against regular players/monsters but when someone uses an item with -resistance properties or skills conviction/lower resistance if your maximum resistance is high enough it can negate them. So the extra resistances only come into play when someone lowers your resist. Say I have 95% maximum fire cap with 120 total fire resistances but anything above 95% is useless until someone uses something like a item with a rainbow facet. Now my resistances will not budge because I have stacked my resist, now if a blizzard sorceress comes into play with her -300 enemy cold resist from cold mastery, if you stack 375+ you may be able to negate it depending on how high the skill is and how high your resistances are stacked.


11. Caps
Caps are known as the maximum resistances one can have. For players the standard cap is 75% although in the above section we discussed on how this can be raised to a total of 95%, now a player cannot exceed 95%. Monsters however can exceed this 95% limit and go over 100% but at 100% resistances they become immune to that specific damage type, we will discuss this later. The lower caps of how low one can go are -100%, no lower. These are for elemental resistances, physical resistance has a different cap on players, players cannot exceed 50% Damage Reduction/Physical Resistance, although they can stack it to negate things such as crushing blow.

12. Immunities
An immunity is when a monster becomes immune to a specific damage type because their resistance has exceeded 100%. Only monsters can be immune to damage types.



13. Breaking immunities
There are 4 ways to break immunities. Amplify damage & Decrepify can remove physical resistances if the monsters resistances will allow it(explained below). Conviction and lower resist can break elemental immunities, although conviction does not affect poison resistances. Any monster with 144< resistances cannot be broken for elemental resistances. Any monster with over 119 physical resistance cannot be broken as well for physical damage types. When breaking an immunity the amount the resists are reduced by suffer a penalty of 20% effectiveness, so -100% physical resistances from amplify damage becomes -20% when breaking immunities, so anything with 120+ cannot be broken. Items with -resistances cannot break immunities, this includes rainbow facets and griffon's eye and all alike items. These items such as Griffon's Eye and alike items including facets work at full effect after the immunities are broken by the aforementioned skills.

Conviction

At level 1, a Paladin's Conviction aura applies -30% to elemental resistances (-6% vs immunities) in a fixed 13.3 yard radius around the Paladin; this increases by -5% (-1% vs immunities) per level, up to a maximum of -150% (-30% vs immunities) which is reached at level 25.
An Infinity 'BerMalBerIst' polearm (Ladder only) is the only other source, which applies Level 12 Conviction Aura When Equipped (-85%/-17% vs immunities).
Note: Poison is not considered an element, therefor poison resistance is not effected by conviction.

Sanctuary

At level 1, a Paladin's Sanctuary aura ignores the positive physical resistance or immunity of undead in a 3.3 yard radius around the Paladin; this radius increases by 2/3 yard per level. Below is a list of items which apply a Sanctuary Aura When Equipped:

16. Special cases
-resistances cannot help traps nor minions because the game reads traps and mercenaries as minions, so facets you will not affect traps that you place such as WoF and LS(examples), they affect traps such as fire blast & shockweb(examples). Although conviction & lower resist will help your minions & traps.

17. Energy Shield
Energy shield is special in it's own because it is applied directly after the PvP penalty. It takes the raw damage, although it can reduce that damage taken by skilling TK. Energy shield takes the straight damage after PvP penalty and the % the skill provides goes to your mana instead of damage dealt to your life. So with 95% ES only 5% of the damage sneaks through, so resistances aren't needed much for full ES builds although Resistances & damage reduction is counted to the remaining damage that gets applied to your life so having max resistances is nice. Damage application order is below.

20. Minions immunities
Several requested a small short section on minions immunities.
Minions such as shadow master and Valkyrie spawn with different items every time they are casted. They can also cast things for themselves which aid in becoming immune, such as fade.
Now the base resistance they spawn with is as shown below.
Shadow(Fire/light/cold/poison)
0.75 * ((110*sLvl) / (sLvl+6)) + 5 %
Valk's a bit different.
Base
(sLvl + sLvlDecoy) * 2
Bonus: 2 * sLvl %
They are also heavily effected by the type of items they are spawned with because they can include modifiers which aid in becoming immune as well.
Valks have a cap at 85% resistances(Skill based, gear can go above this cap), and shadow masters have no upper cap. Although either of them can spawn with an immunity to specific elements.
The immunities are caused by namely the gear/skills they cast. Higher level valks have a better chance of becoming immune.
