Okay that is kind of reassuring. What’s the range of time PT usually takes to heal it and will it be 100% afterwards? Basically if you’ve got an athlete with a tear as you described they wouldn’t go for surgery given the future excessive use?
The goal of PT is to isolate what specific muscle is affected, there are 4 that make up your rotator cuff
Then to target exercises to said muscle
PT itself you only need 2-4 sessions , and then you will be able to do the exercises on your own
Months is the timeframe for recovery
You can go back to 100% but that specific muscle will be injury prone and it’s something you’ll just have to adjust to - you will be able to tell when you’re pushing it with given exercises
Allowing healing time is important though because I’ll give u a tldr of what I did
Multiple rotator cuff tears in college years
Didn’t allow proper recovery , played tennis a few seasons with a jacked rotator and just played through the pain
Ended up having a fall, dislocating shoulder , and tearing labrum
Labrum tear is the consequence of a bad rotator cuff and when this happens then you’re really prone to shoulder problems. You can have a labrum tear even with a normal rotator cuff if the trauma is significant enough , and when this happens it’s usually accompanied with a tear in 1-2 of your rotator cuff muscles. It’s a piece of cartilage that helps keep your shoulder in place. It doesn’t heal like broken muscle does , it isn’t very vascular.
Fortunately my tear is very mild and hasn’t caused major issues. I have rotator cuff work outs in my exercise regiment that I am religious about. This has helped me avoid more problems , have been doing them regularly for 5 years now
If you have a labrum tear that is severe where it can’t scar tissue heal back , then you will be prone to shoulder instability , and it will require surgery. If you have a full thickness rotator cuff tear , depending on the muscle , those sometimes require surgery .
Other wise it’s PT PT PT
