The biggest difference is Oda was involved in making this live one piece action, so at the very least it's not gonna be beyond bad like casting a white dude to be goku, or Adam Wingard botching deathnote live, Yost fkin up cowboy bepop etc.
They said that they can't make it as detailed nor plan on just copying the manga, so they'll be adjusting some parts of it to make sense for the live. I think for a live adaptation of the show, it would be decent instead of the flops above. Something you can definitely watch with your kids, or at least get those non-anime people to give it a try, and if they decently enjoyed it, they might try the manga/anime?
I understand most of what you are posting ... I mean my Sister is 63 years old and wonders why her younger brother (myself) watches Anime even at the age of 56 ... and we are both Kiwi's (from New Zealand) ... she would not watch anime movies yet alone cartoonish programs unless her Grandchildren were watching them in her presence, however, she would watch the "Live" adaptations without realizing it came from an Anime.
That is the difference.
Real actors re-creating an anime series or movie = more susceptible viewers.
They are unaware of the Manga or Anime... the true and in-depth storyline, they are only subjected to the Director(s) cut.
It is a double edged sword in reality... and opinions are based on these facts:
1. Manga reader vs Anime and now Real life actors with limited talents and CGI.
2. Anime watchers of the original series and may also be Manga readers giving their point of view based on the "Real Live Actors" re-creating it for more viewers.
There is a number 3 ... this will come from those that have only watched the real life episodes and actors with the Directors version of both the Anime and the Manga.
