I also believe that you HAVE to be wearing Magic Luck gear to have an Overspawn, spawn (drop). Thus in retrospect, adding the ML gear before the final kill, and an overspawn drops, then it works for final kill shot and is not needed previous to spawn. (including Main well drop item and switching).

Well you can believe all you want but ya don’t

If you wear ml and drop the well then switch .
The main item can overspawn and the side drops won’t .

ML on the final hit definitely is what is considered for all drops except the main drop when welling. However, changing gear during fights does seem to reduce the quality and quantity of drops on average… however many sexy items have still been found after gear swaps. So I think what I’d recommend is just if you are going to switch gear before the final hit, make sure the amount of ML you are adding is worth it
