As I understand it, the Key concern, from Russia, is Nato. Russia has repeatedly suggested that they can accept Ukraine in the EU, they do not like this, but can accept this, but Russia refuses to countenance Ukraine in Nato. By being in the EU, Ukraine would already be more aligned with the West then Belarus is.
To reiterate: The notion of not in Nato but in the EU would already separate its existence from Belarus.
Is this perfect? No. is it the best solution? In my opinion, yes.
The problem right now in 2025 is that the EU now seems to consider the conflict a european existential crisis, just like how russia views it. As a consequence, I believe things will escalate, and yes, this means a direct conflict (war) between Europe and Russia.
Do not trust what Russia says - they lie, or change their mind.
Back in 2004 Lawrov said its fine for Ukraine to join NATO.
Then they "changed mind" or are lying.
In fact a western world is a risk for Kremlin, but not military.
The risk is that Russians see that western people live a better life and make a revolution or split from Russia.
That's why they need to punish and bring back those who left Russia empire: Ukraine, Baltics, Poland, Germany.
Are they going further west than that? I dont know, probably they dont dare attack France as France got nukes, but who knows.
