I agree that the Russians would really want to take control of the full Donetsk oblast before a peace treaty enshrines the status quo. But I don't really see that, not in the short term. They still haven't taken Pokrovsk yet, which isn't even that big a city. Barring a proper collapse of the Ukrainian front lines//at the current, glacial pace, Russia is still at least one year away from taking Kramatorsk/Sloviansk.
Yeah the question is whether the slog keeps slogging or Russia stages a massive breakthrough. It could change on any day, or we could go 2 more years of creeping Russian advances. Putin plainly set his design on taking everything east of the Dnipro and that is still within his grasp
