It makes no sense. Nato simply has to say: if you invade any Nato country we will Nuke Moscow.
This is a known and accepted fact by Russia, who do not have aspirations to invade Nato.
The entire thing is a complete farce.
I have no doubt that Putin would want to "bring home" the Baltics if he could. Other than that, I agree that the threat of a Russian invasion is overblown.
They're not though while they have the backing of NATO, which has the backing of the USA, which they do and it's codified. This move is them declaring themselves as weak when that's really not the case. It's a statement that they do not have confidence in NATO security guaeantees which sends a message of irrational hysteria, a panicking.
This is very bad because it's engaging in what have been agreed upon as war crimes because of hysterical fear. It's a terrible look which causes their governments to lose credibility.
Trump has repeatedly made statements which threw shade on his willingness to defend the Baltics, and we all know he doesn't give a fuck about US responsibility being codified.
