I can recognize the notion that many Russians might genuinely view this as a defensive war. Doesn't mean I have to agree with it. Nor does it imply that Russia's ruling class actually believes their own propaganda.

The analogy to Israel is apples to oranges. The groups in power in Israel's neighboring countries have repeatedly launched major attacks against Israel and aren't shy about the fact that they would commit genocide against Jews if they had the power to do so. Ukraine wasn't attacking Russian territory and didn't proudly display their intent to cleanse Russia of Russians "from the Wolga to the Urals" or something like that.

A nuclear power can't do whatever it wants with full impunity because the threshold for nuclear escalation is so high that it's not something the nuclear power can afford to do over small-time, petty disputes. NATO missiles and drones are hitting Russia regularly now and they still haven't nuked either NATO or Ukraine... To the extent that the US got away with their shit in the past, that was more due to their superior conventional military than due to their nukes. Russian nukes are the only reason why NATO troops aren't parading on Red Square already. American nukes are NOT the reason why Russian tanks aren't parading in Washington DC.
