This is the same argument that the french president made and why he utterly despises Putin - He asked Putin the question and Putin lied. OFC he had to lie. i mean come on. get over it. It was obvious to everyone he was going to invade and there was no way he was going to say "yes i am invading Ukraine on X date". Im no expert but I made the topic before the invasion. some things should be obvious to people of sound mind and a bit of knowledge.

Of course they were blatantly lying when they denied their invasion preparations. It nonetheless establishes a pattern of Russia telling self-serving lies, so I honestly see no reason why their claims of a complete willingness for negotiations should be taken at face value, particularly when their actual actions tell a different story.

I don’t think they are dumb enough to do that. Zelensky has been touring for years to garner international support. Would be the height of stupidity to target a parade that has a bunch of international leaders. Even if they’re not friendlies a lot to lose and nothing to gain from such an act.

If some rogue Azov types or lone wolf attacks try honestly it would buy more goodwill for Russia.

I agree that such a move would most likely come from rogue actors from Ukraine's far right. There could be a perverse rationale behind it, though: a cynical and maximum-risk bet that such an event would eventually draw NATO into the war after China, India etc. declare war on Ukraine and send missiles, tanks, perhaps even troops of their own. As long as Western arms supplies don't ramp up, Ukraine's only hope of winning this war on the battlefield is to somehow incentivize the deployment of NATO troops to Ukraine. A full-blown WW3 between NATO and the rest of the world would be in Ukraine's interest in this twisted, insane line of thinking.

I don't think it escalates to this point, what would likely to happen is there would be a collective shunning by the world and aid to Ukraine would probably dry up. I don't think NATO would even want to be part of it and probably distance themselves from Ukraine.

It would be the equivalent of Russia sending Iskanders or Oreshniks to wipe out western delegations while they are in Kyiv. They have the ability and they know when these people come, can you imagine if they strike Macron or some other leader while they visit Ukraine? Neither India, China would come to Russia's defense and probably just condemn and distance themselves.

that sums it up quite well (i.e. thats my view as well, to a degree. it would just be another episode, swept under the carpet).

Russia has a functional chain of command with their iskanders and oreshniks. Ballistic missiles aren't getting let loose without the Kremlin's go-ahead. For years now we've been maintaining a strategic ambiguity about how much independence Ukrainian forces have with the long range weapons we've been supplying them. We don't want to admit if US special forces have been launching drones at Moscow.

How much control do we really have? As Ukrainians grow more desperate and we are giving weapons to a fatalist nazi movement, a celebration of crushing the nazis held by all their sworn enemies in this war is an extremely juicy target. Extremist groups at the edge of being wiped out in combat aren't making calculations about PR goodwill and the west's desire for stability. World war 1 was started by serbian nationalists, here we've got actual nazis.

They know where and when Putin will be standing with Xi Jinping and a host of other world leaders aligned against them, in open air. In a city they've already struck with weapons we gave them, supposedly launched by Ukrainians acting independently from us. So how tight of a leash do we have? How stable is the Ukrainian chain of command? I mean, we've already had power struggles, top brass fired, entire regiments refusing orders and now they're on the edge of defeat. And even publicly Zelensky isn't yet giving the order to accept the ceasefire next week

Every predictive condition is primed and in place. We've put the gun in the madman's hand and whispered poison in his ear. Hopefully nothing will happen and Vday will stay Vday

Today, we discussed the preparation of a new decision by the National Security and Defense Council. It’s important to keep applying pressure on Russia’s influence networks, as well as on all of their manufacturing and trade operations. We are striving to synchronize Ukrainian sanctions as fully as possible with all those in Europe, so that this becomes a joint position, and we already have good results. In particular, in the form of closed Russian production facilities that had been working for their defense industry.

We are also preparing for talks with the United States on new sanctions steps – we are identifying precisely those pressure points of Russia that will most effectively push Moscow toward diplomacy. They must take clear steps to end the war, and we insist that an unconditional and full ceasefire must become the first step. Russia has to make that move. Right now, they’re worried about whether they can hold their military parade – and rightly so. But what they really should be worried about is that this war is still ongoing. They must end the war.
