The problem is that Russia doesnt want just a land bridge to Crimea. They want to come back to 1980's, when they were occupying half of Europe. And then only the god knows what they will want next. During the Cold War USA was protecting Europe, and Russia didnt attack NATO countries, now not so much because USA is busy with China.
Heard the Bucha masacre? Ukrainians dont want to be mass murdered by Russians, so they are defending their land.
Even if you are about to die on war, its still better to have a chance to kill a bad guy who wants to kill you.
The question you should be asking: why are Russians attacking and making such a big demands?

back to Zelensky, a assasination attempt could be when Russians tried to bribe ukrainian bodyguard, and the bodyguard rejected. So it was not necesarily at "bullets flying" phase.
