Well, the Venice Commission of Council of Europe has an answer to this. In Ukraine, people cannot be forced to take up arms if they refuse military service on religious grounds. That is, by tattooing swastikas on themselves and claiming to be Buddhists, one can dodge the draft on grounds of insanity. And that's wonderful.

Because they don’t want to be thrown into a meat-grinder, in defense of a corrupt country? Run by oligarchs that couldn’t care less about them?

Or because they don’t want to be a cannon-fodder in a proxy war between NATO and Russia? Fighting to extend the influence of global corporations doing business and launder money in Ukraine?

Or because they don’t care how much money military industrial complex makes on this war?

Yes, cowards. Because they support the war while being thousands of miles away from it and believe that their pitiful contribution of a few euros a month gives them the right to demand that the war continues, taking the lives of those who dared to stay due to various circumstances.

People aren't upset because he's trying to end the war, they're upset because he talked a really big game and it now turns out that he has no real plan, and never had one to begin with.


What does he have beyond

"Hey Zelensky, your war is really inconvenient. Could you maybe, like... surrender unconditionally? That would be cool!"
and
"Hey Putin, since this war was only ever about Russia feeling (rightfully!) threatened by NATO and totally not about restoring your empire, could you maybe... just stop this war if I promise you no Ukraine in NATO and also no NATO troops near the Russian borders? Totally no reason for you to advance any further and take territory on the battlefield just because you can, right? Right!?"


Maybe Trump will figure something out eventually, but for now, he needs to go back to the drawing board.





None of that implies that any progress toward a proper ceasefire or peace deal was made.
