the only things likely to kill him are uber lilith, diablo clone, andarial, ubers and life tap in chaos.
If you don't go to those places often then pride or beast golem is perfectly fine

Iron Maiden got removed ages ago.
The max damage setup would be you wearing Beast, your Merc is wearing Infinity and your Iron Golem is made out of Pride.
This gives you Might, Fanatism, Conviction and Concentration.
Infinity because it boosts the fire part of your Corpse Explosion, it deals nice damage and got crushing blow on the weapon which gives you more freedom with the helmet and armor which depend on the infinity weapon and the ias bp you want to hit.
To keep your Iron Golem safe try to get Golem Mastery as high as possible, 40 being a great number, and teleport a lot to reset your Golem. There used to be a bug where the Iron Golem just disappears once he strays too far from you and I don't think Blizzard ever fixed that.
Iron Golem with 40 Golem Mastery has 8400 Life, heals 161 life per second and has 0 fire, 0 cold, 50 lite and 100 poison resis. Pretty much indestructable.
