Hey there.
Well first of all, this training differs from state to state.
However, most states require you obtain EMT-B (basic) before obtaining paramedic. Paramedic is sometimes referred to as EMT-A (advanced). Anyway, in FL at least, it works like this. 3 months of EMT academy (full time), 3 months of fire academy (full time), and 11 months of paramedic school (full time).
Paramedic school is 90% learning about drugs, when/how/what dose to push, etc.
Overall I would say to prepare yourself for EMT and paramedic requires a high level of self commitment and ability to study. Really that's all you will need. Study the materials, take notes in class, pay attention to everything. The tests are always RIGHT out of the book, so as long as you have good study habits you will be fine.
Now, as far as fire academy goes - this is a different ballgame. It is VERY physical and the book portion is much easier than the EMT or Paramedic schools. Fire Academy requires you to be in excellent physical condition for the most part. For that I would recommend taking some time to get your fitness in order (if it isn't already)
hope that helped!!
