So the help section says D2R mediators will not join the game and the D2 section says the mediator will join the game and hold onto the item while the trade takes place. Would it be at all possible to ask for a D2 style mediation in D2R?

I'm assuming you're asking for the 2 traders and the med all in the game together but in d2r?

To go into a bit more detail, I managed to get a rare drop a few hours ago and made an account on this site so I could trade it. Being a completely new user I'm worried people will be a bit reluctant to trade with me if I post this item and was wondering if I could ask a mediator to hold onto the item will the forum gold gets transfered.

The mediation system that is designed for d2r is completely safe. In essence, the mediator receives the forum gold from the person who is paying the fg for the item and holds the forum gold until BOTH traders confirm that the trade was completed successfully. There have been thousands of mediations done via the updated d2r system and there haven't been any scams as a result

That makes a lot more sense. I've read that page over a few times and it wasn't clear about the mediator holding onto the forum gold.
