I wouldn't go as far to say star upgrades mean nothing, star upgrades and orbs I would compare to cosmetic items and skins of a game, although they don't give you "stats boosts" they do grant you the ability to customize your user title and profile which of course is
entirely optional.
As for the donation and buy fg part, we appreciate all purchases and contribution to our site whether it is monetary or if you're just spending time volunteering helping out other members of the community whether it'd be general help, signatures and avatars, hardware and programming help or simply being a good trader with etiquettes.
