Hello,

I'm almost level 70. I tried to farm level 40 (/whistle 40) for items, but nothing dropped after a long while. Do I have to be within a certain level range of the monsters I farm?

What's the best method for farming items? I'm broke and need upgrades.

That method doesn't work as fighting mobs below your level gives significantly smaller amounts of drops. Also whistle mobs generally drop less good drops than exploring because when you explore you can find evil presences (EP's for short) which are a stronger mob which usually drop 1-4 items and usually at least 1 is close to your current level or to the max drop level.

so there's 2 ways of farming.

A. Reach level 55/59 and then when you get near to levelling up, die repeatedly until you get back down to 20% or so, then start farming again.
B. Repeatedly climb level 1-71 or 1-MQ.

Benefits/Disadvantages of each:
A:
Has the fastest killing speed whilst still being able to find level 55 items, which potentially can drop the most valuable items in the game, hence why we don't use lower than 55.
Only needs climbing up to that level once per season
Disadvantages:
Lots of wasted time repeatedly dying
All weapon/charm proficiency progress is lost (other than those which are completed)
Gains no guild points.

B:
Gains guild points, some guilds will pay for you to attempt the Master Quest (MQ) on a barb this option appears at level 71 and can be found in town. If you attempt any unlocked class the level requirement is 2 higher per unlocked class (so samurai is 73, paladin is 75 etc)
The main buyer of guild points at the moment is Real, i would suggest contacting this guy if this is of interest: https://forums.d2jsp.org/user.php?i=520285
Allows you to gain proficiency, each 1 prof is 1%ee , so at lower amounts it's generally not very good, but when you hit 10% and more it really becomes noticable when your 100ee weapon hits with the power of 110ee.
Allows you to to unlock new classes
Is generally how the game is supposed to be played and in my opinion more fun than sitting at the same level
Disadvantages
A lot of time spent at levels where the potential for drops is generally worse than fighting lvl 55 mobs
A lot of time is also spent fighting level 65-MQ mobs where these are significantly more difficult than fighting level 55 mobs.

so i'd recommend you speak to Outraged and see if he's interested in you joining Real (Mommas Kitchen also pays but only accepts players with more posts, just a general rule they have)
I think he's paying around 20 to 25 fg per attempt and you'll probably be invited to his discord which has like minded players to help you along.

Not sure how you only have 24 fg when heading to level 70, did you shrine some of the level 55 drops? as i told you before, these are worth 100 fg for no stats and at least 10 fg if they have stats.
This is what sells: https://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=96505279&f=272
If you don't understand what that table means, then post to say you don't understand, as it's actually really important to know what sells and what doesn't and at what price.

Thank you. that all makes sense. What's the fastest way to increase profession points? Just leveling, doing mq, rinse/repeat?

group climbs. Each melee hit has roughly a 10% chance of gaining 1 prof point for each non 0 damage hit, now imagine there being 9 mobs on the screen and hitting them all using multistrike and compare this to getting only single/double hits in solo.
I explain a bit about whats involved with group climbs here: https://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=82759999&f=74

if you intend to only solo, the main thing is to not die and keep playing.

However prof points should honestly be the lowest thing on your priority list right now, just as an example:
To get 10 prof in say clubs from 0 would take 100 hours+
To buy a level 55 club with ~80-100 ee should cost about 100-300 fg, if you farmed for 5 hours straight with a level 55 character and kept dying to retain his level, you should easily be able to gather 300 fg. The key to this is to explore at level 55 and try and find Evil Presences.

If further on down the line you decide you really wanted to get to 10 prof, hopefully you'll have gear to climb in groups where you can gain between 800-1500 prof per melee climb when you have under 10 prof, which is a significantly faster rate than solo.

This is what your damage difference is between having 10 prof and having a level 55 club with 80ee:
