If I'm looking to have a total investment of around 5k, what would be the best class to pick?

I've seen some people say rogue is the best as you will get more use out of the gear sets over the long run.

Are Magicians good?

And what about barbs? Do they just fall off?

This guide is a great start. The classes and what items they can use can be found in the ladder slasher page.

Any other questions, just ask!

barbs would be my first choice because you can get cheaper armors (chains and plates) which are also better for solo, but rogue is alright because you can use daggers on rogue and samurai next class. if you just go swords, you'll be taken care of for the first 3 classes, but cheap swords arent readily available right now.

It’s all about the weapon choices. If I were starting I’d want to either get a sword set or dagger set. Daggers will cost you more but seem to be more available and give a better dmg spread.

Daggers are used on 4 classes out of the first 5. For paladin you get axes, clubs or swords. I’d suggest clubs as way cheaper than axes and unlikely a new player reaches Headhunter class.

I am probably one of the minorities that would advocate for mage and casting classes. I have found that they are pretty cheap to gear since they aren't really meta. Plus you can easily heal yourself if needed. The only downside I would say is you would need to invest in some mana regen gear and have to constantly pick up junk items to shrine to fill up that larger mp tank, but honestly picking up shriners is part of how all classes would speed up the hp, mana regen or both anyway, so it really all boils down to your own playstyle and preferences.

Its depends if you plan to solo or guild climb..
But i would choose rogue to avoid having to reinvest if you pass the mq :) dagger dex and dex armor are usually not too hard to find on mkt ..

For a better experience join a slashing guild :)
