Hey, I am just looking into this game and have a few questions for my first character. I choose Barbarian because it's the most straight forward class in most games. I noticed enhanced effect seems to be a stat to look out for on the market. Are there any other stars that are useful for a Barbarian?

Out of the melee weapons, is there one weapon class that is superior to the others overall?

I am having trouble knowing how much to pay for items since I only bought 2-3 cheap ones to get going. How much investment would I need to do to get to the master quest? Not looking to spend a lot since I would like to test it out first :)

There is not really a big variety of items in my level range on the marketplace, do people around here still sell starter stuff? Seems like most people I see here have been playing a long time.

Hey welcome to slasher!

barb is a solid choice, however if you are looking for longevity within the game i would start with a rogue. gear wise; to get you from 1-71 as you mentioned, look for items with enhanced effect.

the only reason i mention the rogue, is because all useable gear you would purchase/use on a rogue, is multi class useable. if you pass to samaurai, the daggers, scales and or robes would be transferrable. if you then pass to paladin, the scales robes would be transferrable, however you would need to get axes at that point.

i would look for lights and wild heals for your dex gear, and also enhanced effect (if you hit warlock).

on sc you can get away with dex robes/scales, however if you were to try HC, you would require EE armor, as there is rarely groups to climb with, and most solo when we can.

armor: scales/padded robes (EE and or dex)

weapons: daggers/axes (EE)

charms: lights/wilds (dex and ee)

look for 100+ee items at 20+

another option for weapons which isnt a bad idea to have is a staff set as well.

as per investment into the game: gear is more readily available on SC, and pricing is substantially lower than HC in most cases due to the fact of player base (most are afraid of RIP on HC, loosing char and gear on it if by chance a RIP happens). if you are looking to make a ton of fg, you may have to find another game. lol. you will more than likely be investing about 2-3k fg for the lower ee/stat basic sets needed to help you climb faster. you can climb without ee gear, it will just take you longer.

check this for max stats can happend. check the sc market subforum as well for items you cannot find in the aktive ingame market.

aslong you dont know if you stay, its a good way to use what you find or buy some cheap with around the half max stat (morely the ee weapons are meaning).

thanks for your answer :)

i dont know if it is needed to plan ahead until warlock right now, but samurai might be something that i could unlock in a little while if i keep playing. :D
will definitely try out rouge as a second character.

i think i will try to open a topic later where i will look for some daggers and or axes and scales.
is it benefitial to only use one type of weapon?

not really looking for a game to make fg so this might work out. i like the concept of not only having one set of high level gear like in diablo but having a need to fit together good items for every level class. kind of an interesting approach.

the sets i mentioned above are useable between all graduated classes. it would just save you fg in the long run to look for specific sets. ALSO: it would help build your proficiency faster in each respected weapon/charm choice, instead of a little of this and that here and there.

I disagree with choosing rogue as your starter character. Ee scales and leather armor are NOT cheap and you will need some decent ones starting from lvl 30 and up but your biggest investment should be in lvl 55 gear because once you hit lvl 55 the monsters get harder and harder as you lvl up but the gear stays the same (there is no lvl 60+ Items).

I personally recommend barbarian as your first because clubs are cheap and chain/plate mails are even cheaper. You can snag 100 ee++ chains/plates/clubs on the weekend for 1-5 fg sometimes off the marketplace.

Also dump 5-10 stats into vitality and the rest into strength

i agree that clubs chains plates are cheaper, but to what end? i get that for anyone starting out the cheaper gear is typically the go to, but if they are planning to stick it out, its cheaper in the long run to just buy the gear they could use with graduated classes.

I just dont get why is it everyone's primary objective to recommend gear that's obsolete after graduating a few mq's, other than to keep the market on these items going or to dump them for a few fgs...

i started with clubs and plates, and a barb. nothing against them. i quickly found out that after dumping all of my fg into gear taht was not useable beyond a certain point, and only on certain characters, that it would have been better to just start looking for the gear that i could use on all graduated character classes.

At the end of the day, it is everyones personal preference as to class and gear they choose. except if you pass your mq.. then you are limited to what you can use.

market is pretty bad for sellers now with d2r, good time for buyers imo
you should be able to get ~100ee items for all levels daggers/armors for under 1kfg
