Axes are probably the worst choice.

Clubs are the cheaper option, especially good if your goal is to make fg. Should you pass, just continue using a barb as it has the best base stats. a 150ee MQ club should cost about 1200-1500 fg.
Swords are slightly more expensive and usable by the next 2 classes, should you pass you can move straight on to the next class without gear change. a 150ee MQ sword should cost around 2000-3000 fg
Axes are good for players immediately buying in to the game, as daggers and axes will cover all melee classes. a 150ee MQ axe should cost around 5000-6000 fg

In terms of barb/fighter:
Fighter is slightly worse stats but is able to charge powerstrike much faster. Barb is generally considered more optimal.

Stats: 100 vit rest strength. There is no reason at all to stat dex unless you happen to use polearms, which is very unlikely. Both swords/clubs are significantly better if you stat strength. It doesnt matter for axes.
My personal suggestion is to not even care about the type of weapon then once you have a set, you can then replace bits to make it a full set of the same type of weapon.

this guide has a lot of good basic info: https://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=82660445&f=272

Basically what Bwj posted.

If you don't have a full set of Axes and use a sword in between levels, you may want to just add to Strength since a sword is 75/25 ratio (Strength being 75)

You also want to get your Vitality to 100 before starting on your damage stats, as you gain more life per level the more Vitality you have.

Unless this has changed? But I’m pretty sure this is accurate.

That has never been the case. That only counts for vita that you don’t stat yourself, like sneaky or potions. Any stat points that you add will give you the life retroactively.

Vitality: Increases the physical defense for armor. For every 25 stat points you have in vitality, you gain +1 to Life Regen. Every Level Up you will gain an amount of life equal to your base vitality.

Does this not mean if you have 50 points in Vitality (without stats from gear) then you would gain 50 health per level up?
...60 points in Vitality -> 60 health per level up?
etc.

It depends on how you gain the vita. Any stat points that you allocate yourself will give you the full amount of life regardless of when you do it. Vita points gained through quests will only give you the life bonus from the next level you gain. That is why T1-T3 potions with vita/int are more valuable than a level 20 potion.
