2 Corinthians 5:1-10 - For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeingwhat is to come.
Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.
The difference is that The Bible is the Word of God. The word does not come from man, rather, it comes from above. How do we know it comes from God?
2 Timothy 3:16 - All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
You are right in saying that 'people' have been putting their own spin on what happens after we die. In that, you cannot know for sure. Yet when we read the Bible we do know that it did not originate from people. We know that Jesus is the Messiah. If you trace scripture and compare what it says to Jesus' Genealogy then you'll find that the prophecy points to him as the coming Messiah. Knowing then that he is the Messiah, you would do well to listen to whatever He has to say. This is not something that you should take lightly. Your eternity is what is at stake here.
One word is all it takes: Yes!
I would agree there are wisdoms and teachings in that ancient book, by that I mean the old testament, that should never be taken lightly. I would rather you don't ridicule my Catholic past, as it was through no choice of my own to he baptized into that particular organization as an infant.
My choice to become a Freemason many years later however was made of my own free will and requires me to acknowledge pieces of the bible as historical truth, which I have no problem with, as I do believe the old testament is exactly that.....a historical account of true events and scientific information wrapped up in fables and parables, a very effective way of teaching the masses.
In fact, if anything, I am more inclined to lean towards the possibility of being a Jew in my heart. Strange I know, but true nonetheless.
I don't disbelieve that Jesus was a real person, but I have yet to have it proven to me that the things written about him many years after his death were not done so for the sole purpose of greed. In other words, the fellas he hinges around with found a way to make some serious money off him and to this day still do.
The conversation earlier about sex trafficking etc can be found far outside the reaches of pedophiliac priests...if you recall characters such as Jimmy Swaggart and Jim and Tammy Fae Baker.
Just a couple of examples of your religion taking advantage of peoples fears of death.
