you need bushfix
solid object between the float and the device its attached to
as a spacer

All that would do would make this fill valve not work correctly as intended.

Just to be clear, I’m not lifting a finger. This is landlord’s responsibility, and part of the work of being a landlord. I have no obligation as a responsible tenant to do anything but report it and ensure I keep them up to date on how it looks.

its the seal around the little cup thing thats supposed to get lifted up to let water out
or maybe the cups been detached from the arm thing that has the floating thing when u press the button thing

That would be correct depending on your terms of renting.
Usually minor things (if you know how) is somewhat ok to many of people since it isn't really worth the 'hassle' of calling a landlord.

If you are dealing with a small home and you inform them, the renter and landlord could simply communicate that a part is changed and compensate them from the rent.
Although many people prefer not to do this since it would complicate things and some landlords abuse good nature or "forget".
