Hey GC, quick question here for my brothers(didn’t realize so many had custodial and plumbing skills here). I’m renting and this toilet has been making draining sounds. Every 45s or so it makes the sound, and I believe the flapper needs replaced?

Would appreciate any insights into this issue. Thx, pls let me know if wrong section. I tried YouTube so far but didn’t find much.

Thank you!

Couldn't hear anything in the video.

If it was the flapper then the tank would periodically refill, which didn't happen in the video. And since I can't hear anything I'm not sure what's wrong.

also that's such an old system, I don't even see the flapper.

Okay yeah that would be the flapper, or whatever you would call that tower in the middle that acts as the flapper. Just needs a replacement. They're super simple to replace though.

You should be able to pull the model number from the inside of the tank and see what flush kits are usable.

It is refilling water in the tank.

Usually can be fixed in one of two ways.

First would be the part that lifts the line to let the water in.
If it is damage and needs to be replace or just adjusted and came loose, I can not say offhand without physically seeing the parts.
Second could be the cup that goes on the bottom where the water leaves the tank and flushes the toilet itself.

Can not say for sure, but it is one of the two. (usually the first)

Looks like it's reaching the over flow mark and refilling.
You can adjust your float and put it a bit lower so the water doesn't reach the overlflow pit.

I think it’s consistently draining so if I lowered it, it would still keep draining?

Honestly landlords just gotta fix this thing.. it’s older than me.

This may help
If your landlord pays for water, don't bother.
Let him pay the fees of the overflow, or use it to make him come out and replace parts.
