Voted No.

Reason- I believe that somethings need to be learned by one's self.
You can send a person the rules and answers to the most basic questions and I will bet that that person will be posting in the GH forum within the hour, probably break a rule or two also.

Its like telling a kid "Dont touch that, its HOT"! and the first thing they do is touch the thing anyway.

Yea, good idea.

Not everybody thinks "hey lets go read the rules" when they join a web forum

If they aren't multis, but actually new users...then it is their first time here...probably from d2 or a search engine...

They need to be told how to do certain features...

They need to be told that their images will NOT work until they hit 15 posts...and may even need to tell them where to get image hosting (http://sojets.net) :-D

I vote yea just because there are so many possible uses for a "welcome message"

@Hylia - It's not forcing them to read it - it's going that one step further to show the new members that we want to help them out.

You both don't honestly believe that new members read the rules, stickies etc. - they just want to get straight into posting - having a little PM (looking to dumb down the initial PM) explaining a few things will do them wonders - so far I've noticed 5 new members in the one thread asking the same question -
eg. "How many posts do I need for Signature/Image Posting" "Ah thanks this helped me out too".
But thanks for your opinion anyhow.

Kind regards,

Ben.

If they were smart I think they would want to at least read the rules as the rules do include how to get around. :P

I like the idea of an automated PM when you join d2jsp though, maybe one that just says hi welcome to d2jsp :)

This is kind of what I'm implying - my suggestions is a base outline for something to be added onto - could turn from being incredibly informative to being short, sweet and to the point. eg: link to both rules and a warm hello.

Kind regards,

Ben.

Great idea, it would definitely help users to be far more informed. However, I believe that the Words of Wisdom thread should be included in the mix. It has definitely pushed me in the right direction, and so it should point newcomers in the same direction. :)

I think it would be an effective method for informing new users of a few peculiarities specific to JSP.
I.e. How many posts are required to wear a signature or post an image.

Sure, a new user could comb the rules to find out how many posts are required before one can wear a signature or post images, but it would nice if one had a pm letting him know, especially since he'll probably be wondering shortly after joining.

I viewed this suggestion when you first posted it and found it rather interesting, I had only recently started the New User Guide - http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=63392948&f=34
I think instead of that block of information, turn it into an introductory paragraph, and include a direct link to that guide - alternatively, as soon as they FIRST login, re-direct them to that guide automatically (Could be an easy alternative)

I did, however, vote yes - this is a superb idea.
