I'll bump this topic as I believe this should be considered - or at least further discussed.

I don’t think this would be beneficial. Not for me personally as I mark certain PMs as unread so they appear differently in my inbox so I can find / access them easier vs read PMs, this doesn’t mean I want a notification next to my inbox showing me how many marked as unread PMs I have as that doesn’t benefit me, however seeing how many new/not actually read PMs does. New PMs and PMs that have been marked as unread are not the same thing and shouldn’t be counted as the same.
Something that would be beneficial would be to not change the amount of new PMs beside your inbox until that PM has actually been opened as opposed to just viewing your PM box which clears your new PM notifications. I.E - you log in and have 4 new PMs, you open your inbox and read one of them, this should now display 3 instead of 0 as you actually haven’t opened those other 3 PMs yet
The 2nd paragraph I completely agree with and this is a current site suggestion in a different thread. The first one I have different views on. By simply highlighting a PM title it doesn't stand out in a way that would actually minimize the chance of missing it. At least when using dark mode I find the visual difference between bolded and regular text rather small. Eventually I would still comb through my PM list one by one in order to not miss one, a number would help keep track with that.
The number next to your PM icon would indicate the amount of PMs that need some sort of attention (completely new ones plus those old ones that require (so far untaken) actions).
I've tried it out with every email address I currently have in use (work, gmail, other local ones), they all increment the counter if you hit "mark unread" - and we could benefit from that as well.
