VAR has made the number of penalties skyrocket over all. It's not that Madrid is lucky or benefiting from some conspiracy.... La Liga's refs tend to penalize soft offenses, and now that they can watch replays of them, more pks get called.
The number of penalties per game in La Liga, is now a whopping 0,4. Almost one in two games, which is pretty crazy. With 145 penalties over all, this season of La Liga is already 10 penalties ahead of the of it's previous record, and that's considering that there are still two games to be played for each team, and that there were seasons in the past with 42 and 44 games per team, instead of the present format of 38.
Clubs are breaking all sorts of records in terms of penalties too... for instance, Mallorca and Alavés have conceded 16 and 15 penalties respectively, which both break any past record for any team in La Liga's history.
Over all, the teams that are benefiting the most are those that play with a more vertical style of football, especially if they have fast forwards, as it's easier for defenders to be forced to make some sort of contact. This is why Villarreal is the team with the most penalties in favour (11), followed by Athletic, Madrid and Mallorca (10), Celta and Eibar (9), and Valencia and Atlético (8).
Again, imo it also has a lot to do with the punitive mentality of spanish refs, as other leagues with VAR have much fewer pks. The Prem has seen 83 so far this season, while Bundesliga finished the season with 76 (which La Liga will even double if they keep their 0,4 average this week).
HOWEVER, Serie A has seen even more penalties. 159 so far this season, which is 0,5 per game... idk wtf is going on over there

(I assume it's a combination of most teams playing vertically and refs being too strict)
