Lmao over 1 fucking year difference
I guess we should be rdy for some dumb fucking contract signing through a trade/FA. I bet Benning gonna offer more than his original offer knowing edler will walk. Rather have edler for 3 yrs than fucking Gardiner, myers, zaitsev, etc.

Edler is probably using the media to pressure Benning and also show Benning the FA offers he gets from other teams and ask Benning to match it. I seriously don't wanna watch stecher and Hutton playing 30min night again... Not to mention Hughes gonna have to step up biggggg time

That 1 year difference is a big deal though.

He probably wants a NTC again. Wasted protection spot with Seattle looking to pilfer talent.

Furthermore you need to resign Petey and Hughes down the line so 2 years instead of 3 is a big deal.

I can see why a hard line is being drawn.

Zaitsev would be cheap to acquire if we wanted him..... Publicly stated he wants out and the Leafs are in terrible cap situation. They have no leverage as far a return for him goes. I don't know if we even want him though.

I still think it will be Edler who will cave. Clearly loves it in Vancouver and does not want to uproot his family at this point in his career just to go somewhere for a few years and return to Vancouver after retirement or go back to Sweden.

This should be a lesson to stop with the NTC nonsense. Back yourself into a damn corner every time.

fuck Benning. Losing Edler when our blue line already sucks is catastrophic. Tanev, Stetcher and (god willing) Hughes will be the only blue liners who can even skate at an NHL level every night. We're at a point where we genuinely need to be getting better as a team and we lose our best blue liner because our braindead GM won't give him an extra year? The same guy who gave Eriksson 6 years and Beagle 4? What the fuck?

E: ok reading the bit about the NMC does lessen the blow, but fuck it just give him more years and park him on IR when he eventually gets too banged up to keep playing. unless that was never an option.

Ya our D is brutal.....

Getting rid of that injury prone slug who could not even stand up for the team was a step in the right direction but more needs to be done.

Canucks will probably have to draft a d-man with the 1st pick, even if it is not the best pick to make.

At some point you have to shore up the D if you want to make a run in the playoffs.

I am looking at our roster right now and the D core looks very weak. You know there is a problem when Luke Schenn starts to look good out there compared to some of the others.

I am sure Edler is using your logic. Look at that shit that was thrown at those calibre of players. How does Beagle even fit into a future direction? Same with Eriksson. They are already on the downswing and will certainly be next to useless by the time the young guys hit their prime. No sense to go after those guys.

Hell I'm not even expecting playoffs, just creating an environment where players can expect to win. We're getting dangerously close to becoming Buffalo or Edmonton. Doesn't matter if you have godlike talent like McDavid/Draisatl/Eichel/Dahlen if you never put the pieces together.

I actually commend Benning for not making a dumb decision on Edler even though he's on shaky ground job security wise.

Losing Edler weakens our D and team for sure but he's not worth hurting our future, especially when you consider we'll still have 10mil tied up in Eriksson and Beagle in 2 years.

Even with Edler, we're not expecting to be a good team while he's still a serviceable player (AKA the next two seasons). A 3-year deal for Edler makes us worse in the 3rd year which is not worth making us better in the next two.

I definitely believe in culture and intangibles, I mean look at the effect Kawhi Leonard had on the Raptors this playoff run, but we've also learned over Benning's tenure that you can cripple your team and cap-structure trying to chase culture COUGH FOUNDATIONAL SUTTER COUGH

Edler sets a good example by being a hard-working no-maintenance player but Alex freaking Edler isn't the difference between us having a good room or a toxic room going forward.

Simply put this team is 2 elite pieces + some good depth away from being legit. Until we get that figured it out it doesn't matter how many serviceable and/or culture-carrier players we have.

2 elite + good depth turns most teams into contenders lol. I don't disagree with your logic but problem is that Benning's moves have been a complete cacophony. First, give up picks for mediocre talent to try to retool to no avail... then overpay for veterans... then let veterans walk and do what exactly? We're bottom 3 in the blue line, bottom 5 in forwards and bottom 10 in goaltending. Hughes and DiPietro are our only blue-chip prospects (esp. with Juolevi looking like a bust). If he doesn't intend to make a genuine run for the playoffs he has to stockpile futures since we're so far removed from being relevant, but hanging onto Edler and other vets back in February makes no sense if that was the plan all along.
