Good for Mack, he was the most underpaid player for a while.

He has been saying he won't take a discount and his new deal will be fair

That's why loyalty/hometown discounts are dumb. Grab that bag while you can and get a NMC to go along with it.

He's basically signing a fair deal, to make up for being severely underpaid and taking account the cap going up for the next 8 yrs.

Comparing % of the salary cap when the contract was signed -

McDavid (2017) - 16.67%

MacKinnon (2022) - 15.27%

He's already taking a slight discount and it'll go lower once cap rises. Matthews or mcdavid will probably sign for more and become the next highest paid etc.

This.
It's not a bad deal for Colorado. Especially since the cap should go going up, this is a fair deal for an elite player.

Nathan MacKinnon's deal includes $85.34 million in signing bonus money

that is a lot of money each july 1st, averages to 10.67 a season

I'm actually surprised the avs gave out that much in signing bonuses.

A fair contract for a player of Mackinnon's Caliber. Gives the rest of the teams in the west a chance to win.

Had he signed another team friendly deal they would have had a stranglehold for years. Don't blame Mack for taking the money.

He was underpaid for years and they got their cup.

Avs lose Johnson and 300K with this contract extension kicking in next season. If the cap goes up anywhere close the 17mil like it's reported todo over the next 2 years, the avs are going to be dangerous for atleast the next 5 years.

Legacy is just beginning
