Shaq was way more agile than Embiid will every be. Watch his Magic games and his first few season with Lakeshow. He would of adapted to todays league standards.
Embiid has elite footwork and agility defending the perimeter that Shaq was NEVER capable of doing. The guy played soccer his entire childhood lol. Shaq was an absolute liability defending the pick and roll and would regularly be targeted, everyone knows this. Even playing in an era where all he had to do was stand in the paint and defend the rim versus bigs todays who are asked to do way more and be far more versatile. Plus, Shaq was notorious for taking defensive plays off if he wasn't getting the ball (which he regularly admits to).
Embiid is a FAR more dominant defender than Shaq ever was. Obviously. But Shaq is the most dominant low post scorer in NBA history. Embiid will never be that level of dominant down low, even though he's far and away the best low post scorer in todays league statistically. The game has changed and Embiid is as well rounded as they come able to score at all 3 levels efficiently.
Shaq was athletic for his size in his early days, but he never possessed the lateral quickness of Embiid. Don't get those things confused, Shaq was always a liability if he had to defend the perimeter (which was almost never). The guy to this day still doesn't know how to properly defend the pick and roll and thinks the guard should just "fight through it" 😭
