Ohtani contract is.....WILD

He's deferring $68M PER YEAR wtf

How is this even remotely fair or allowed by the league

honestly i get it he is from like Japan and completely uncultured but bro the league is doing nothing about this which is fucking ridiculous

not to mention the journalists that said Ohtani was going to Toronto no one cares at all and its just normal for journalistic integrity to be completely ignored nowadays

Also Toronto is the best city on the planet so not sure what a little delaware small town coal miner is gonna have opinions on what a good town is

Think about how much he will be saving on taxes when he moves out of Cali in 10 years right as the deferred payments start coming in.

i keep seeing people mention the tax savings, but when you're making that kind of salary i cannot envision a 12.3% income tax being that much of a deterrent. especially when you can simply reinvest that money in the S&P which has yielded... 12.4% annually the last 10 years

dude could have just signed a similar deal in texas or florida if he cared about the taxes that much

clearly he understands the value of winning and knows how to market himself.

he's now going to be the most popular athlete in the most notable city in the country and has allowed them to basically purchase endless rings for the next decade

The only reason he got $700M to begin with was because its deferred. He received a couple hundred million extra built into the contract. No other team was giving him $700M over the next 10 years. Every indication was $500M range.

So he earned an extra $200M in addition to the tax savings from the deferment after he moves out of Cali.

All while getting to go to a top tier team willing to keep spending and win. While playing in a market that will keep him in the spotlight and ensure he earns a fuck ton on endorsements as well.

LOS ANGELES -- Shohei Ohtani's historic deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers allows him to opt out if owner Mark Walter or president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman is no longer involved with the team, industry sources told ESPN.

The email outlining Ohtani's contract that was distributed to agents by the Major League Baseball Players Association on Wednesday and reviewed by ESPN stated: "If specific change in Dodger personnel, Player may opt out of contract at end of season the change occurs." Two sources familiar with the contract confirmed an initial report by The Associated Press that the "specific change" is in reference to Walter and Friedman.
