I wanted to do 4k gaming with a 1080ti i7 8700k build, or 1440 gaming with the 1080 i7 8700k build, however, both builds would require me to get a new monitor and with the current market, everything together would cost me $2k+.

So for now I will wait for GPU prices to drop before I move to 1440 or 4k, and I'm going to stick to casually gaming at 1080p.

What I want to do is simply upgrade my GPU since my current GPU fan died, and I've narrowed my choices down to the 1050ti, or the 1060 6GB

This is the current setup I am using.

CPU: i5-2500k
GPU: XFX Radeon HD 6870
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD3 LGA 1155
PSU: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 650W ATX12V/EPS12V 80
RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR GT 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM

I am a bit out of touch with my computer building, haven't done any of this since like 2012. What I need to know is:
1. Is either card compatible with the rest of my build?
2. Is the $120 difference worth buying the 1060 if the 1050ti can max out most games at 1080p?

The purpose of buying the cheap card is simply because I would like to build an expensive computer at some point, just when the GPU prices start to come back down.

Where are you finding them at 600? Every site I go on gives the lowest price at the 1100 to 1200 range for the 1080ti

Hell, the lowest 1080 I can find is around 700

You're looking for out of stock last gen cards.
The RTX cards are already under MSRP and AMD failed to bring any real competition with Radeon 7, so for the near future, graphics cards prices aren't coming down any further.
IDK what kinda drugs you're on, but if you want a real 4k gaming system, it's just going to cost you 2k. If you can't afford that, stick to 1080p.

As for a temporary graphics card, get an RX 570 if you're only going to have it a short while, or an RX 580 8gb and it will last at least a couple years.
If you know what you're after and have a budget, fill out the sticky and we can help you get a full build together.

I mean yes, I can afford 4k gaming very easily. I have plenty of money, but I'm saving up for a house now, so until I get stable with that, I'd prefer to save the $2000+ that is going to be required for 4k gaming. I am fine with 1080 gaming for now.
If 4k gaming set ups never get cheaper, then I'll make that decision to make one in the future.

As for now I just need to know if the 1050ti or 1060 will work with my setup, and now I guess I'll consider the RX 580 since it's on par with the 1060.

Is the RX 580 or 1060 going to have that much more of a shelf life over the 1050ti?
or is the performance of those two that much greater than the 1050ti?

def 6gb 1060 imo. avoid the nasty amd dips in fps.
and a 1060 is like 75% better then a 1050ti, so yes its shelf life should be almost dbl. though no one can say how long that would be exactly.

I was leaning towards that to begin with, I was just waiting to hear if anyone would tell me otherwise.

As far as I've researched, I don't think my current components would bottleneck the GPU too much, right?

with an overclock no, the 1060 should be fine.
