Irrational Games hopes to rapture us away to the cloudborne city of Columbia on October 16, the date publisher 2K Games has announced BioShock Infinite will drift onto PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in North America. The international release will follow on October 19.

Jettisoning the underwater world of the first two BioShock games, Infinite rises into the skies of 1912 to visit another great city founded upon an ideal which turned out to be troublesome in reality--American Exceptionalism. Amid a civil war, we'll be a former Pinkerton agent sent to rescue a young lady with extraordinary powers, who's guarded by some awe-inspiring monstrosities.

Courting the hardcore/curmudgeonly market, BioShock Infinite packs '1999 Mode,' an "old school" twist which amps up the difficulty and encourages specialization. 1999, by no coincidence, is of course the year Irrational and the late, great Looking Glass released System Shock 2.

Irrational is working on Infinite with its former sister studio, the branch of 2K Marin previously known as 2K Australia, and Irrational's Australian studio before that

Crytek’s Impressive GDC Line-Up

By Nathan Schmidt on 02 March 2012 in NEWS, THE WARP ZONE with 2 Comments

With GDC starting next week, Crytek has announced what they are bringing to the show this year. The line-up features some stuff we knew about like CryEngine 3, and a few surprises like Crytek’s new PC online game service titled Warface! Check out all the details below…

GFACE

GFACE, our recently announced social entertainment service, and its business development team is on the lookout for fun third-party social, casual, core free2play games that can complement our launch line up. Everyone interested in becoming part of GFACE should contact us at devgface.com to set up an appointment to learn more about the GFACE Social Media Publishing Platform to “Play.Together.Live.”

Warface

Crytek presents Warface, a free-to-play online game for the PC. Warface is an historical first for Crytek and a company milestone. Developed from scratch and designed especially for this innovative release format, Warface is a showcase for truly next-gen visuals and production values that have so far been witnessed only in full priced retail games.

“With Warface we aim to become the next-gen of free to play shooters that are on par with traditional AAA games in terms of quality. We have the team and technology to make it happen and are starting with strong partners in Asia to ensure we gain experience with the free to play business model”, said Cevat Yerli, CEO & President of Crytek. “It’s the next logical step for us to bring this new IP to a global audience and thus to our worldwide community.”

CryENGINE ® 3

GDC attendees can participate in CryENGINE presentations every full hour. Topics that will be covered are next-generation DX 11 graphics and tools upgrades, Cinebox, creating characters for CryENGINE, AI Systems, UI Actions and Flow Graph and After Action feature set for Serious Games.

RTI

Real Time Immersive, Inc. (RTI) is a simulation and serious games studio established to support CryENGINE® licensees in the serious game and simulation market space. The team will be present on the show floor and show their latest developments.

Developers over at Digital Illusions CE reveal the most played and most popular map in Battlefield 3, give some insight to weapon and vehicle balance and teases an interesting week for Battlefield 3 fans.

When asked which Battlefield 3 map has been most played so far, Senior Gameplay Designer, Alan Kertz, revealed, “Op Metro.” This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise given the controversy that surrounds this unique map. Unique, because it oddly doesn’t quite seem to fit what Battlefield 3 has become known for, given it’s extreme linearity and numerous choke points. For every player that despises it’s limited space of movement and the utter chaos that it can often encourage, other players will take any chance they can get to roam the underground halls, light machine gun in hand, racking up the kills.

Kertz was also recently asked about weapon balance and how the DICE team went about its construction. Kertz answered surprisingly, “with 1 gun. The game was built around the M16 as a base.” The M16 assault rifle seems to be quite popular among assault class aficionados given the all-round, work horse that it is. Kertz’s statement seems to explain this. “Vehicle balance generally starts with the speed and handling of the vehicle, and then builds in a rock paper scissors way,” he added.

Meanwhile, other members of DICE tease some upcoming surprises for Battlefield 3 fans. Daniel Matros, Global Community Manager, mentioned that there are some “good playtests going on in the Studio today,” while Senior Designer, Tim Kjell has “a ‘slight feeling’ next week will be a very, very… shall we say, rewarding, week?” Could he be referring to the recently announced Inside DICE feature? Or something completely different
