In what may be the most unhelpful tease ever, Valve boss Gabe Newell has assured fans that the company will announce "something with a three in it" at E3 2012. While this could be chalked up to Valve's adorable tendency to mess with its fans, it could also be part of another alternate reality game (ARG) that the company seems to be cooking up.

PC Gamer reports that Gabe Newell reportedly replied to a 4chan e-mail with, "I don't suppose it would ease your wrath if I told you we're announcing all of your favorite things at E3 2012?" Deciding that wording was "confusing," he then said, "Yes, we are announcing something with a three in it."

We're sure the cheeky comment recognized that nearly all of Valve's big franchises are set for a third installment, but it could be a bit more than mere trolling. PC Gamer suggests that various Valve activities lately are part of a new ARG. Wheatley's appearance this weekend on the Spike VGAs had visual information in the background, and the Doug_Rattmann Twitter account began streaming long strings of numbers on December 11. The crack hive mind known as the Internet will likely unearth any messages contained.

Newell's tease and the recent Half-Life 3 shirt could be hints at the ARG, misdirections, or just a bit of fun with an easily-riled fanbase. Valve previously released Portal 2 early through the Potato Sack ARG, which hid clues in various indie games.

If this is an ARG setting the stage for Valve's reveal, it will have to be an extremely slow burn to last all the way to June of 2012.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developer GSC Game World has acknowledged and confirmed rumors that the studio is in trouble.

Last week, a report indicated the Ukraine-based developer would close its doors, citing its "inability to license a console version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 to publishers" as one of its primary issues. When it was announced in August 2010, GSC Game World said S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was built upon "new multi-platform technology," but promised PC was the primary platform for the 2012 release.

GSC Game World initially denied rumors that pointed at the studio's closure, but retracted statements made on Twitter regarding the situation, and offered no comments when clarification was requested.

"We will do our best to continue. However, at this point, nothing is certain," GSC Game World's Twitter account noted earlier today.

In a more precise Tweet an hour later, the company promised its website, "with the forum [and] tech support" would continue. "The shop will continue until the nearest planned items sell out," the Tweet added.

According to UkraNews [via Eurogamer], GSC founder and CEO Sergei Grigorovich was unhappy with the progress of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 and had decided to close the company. The report also stated "Ukranian law enforcement was interested in taking control of the company."

If you're a fan of the franchise like me, you should check out GSC Game World's official store for your last opportunity to pick up S.T.A.L.K.E.R. related swag.

Some inquisitive fellows on NeoGaf have been raiding the Steam content registry for clues, and seem to have come across some entries suggesting that that Alan Wake may be heading to PC.

In further support of the Alan Wake PC release rumours, Just Push Start spotted an interview on Finnish site YLEX in which Aki Järvilehto from Remedy said “we have received feedback from a lot of PC gamers, and I have to admit that yes, we somehow ignored that. Let’s see if in the near future we could have some positive news to tell you about dating!” We love positive news about dating!

Way back in 2006, Alan Wake was the poster boy for Intel’s Core 2 Duo CPU, and was regularly demoed on PC to show off its multi-threading tech. Then, all of a sudden, it became an Xbox 360 exclusive, and the PC version vanished. As a PC version was worked on heavily in the run up to its release, it theoretically shouldn’t be too hard to resurrect it for a Steam release. It’d coincide nicely with the downloadable Alan Wake follow up story, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, which is heading to the Xbox 360 early next year.

It’s not just Alan Wake haunting the Steam registry files. DIY Gamer have spotted evidence of a very tasty new Humble Bundle. The registry entry suggests that a new bundle may include Super Meat Boy, BIT.TRIP.RUNNER, Jamestown, Nightsky and Shank as a starting lineup, with Gratuitous Space Battles and Cave Story+ to be added after the bundle has kicked off. If accurate, that’s a fantastic collection. How much would you pay for that bundle, and would you like to see Alan Wake come to Steam?

oh fuck yea
alan wake my pants up
