this is the honest truth
I'm not so sure it is, PC gaming still seems to be pretty lucrative.
Just look at this post I made a couple pages back, analyzes the sales for BF3 and Skyrim.
Studies show that over 75% of PC players buy digitally
Digital outlets, Origin, Steam, D2D, etc, don't generally post their sales data
Around the time of these numbers, EA reported to have sold over 5 million copies of Battlefield 3, numbers seem to add up.
Massive numbers of simultaneous players of Skyrim on Steam.
Anyways here it is.
Some interesting stuff about the numbers on the PC side of the ball. I have been looking for numbers to compare how many copies of BF3 or Skyrim were sold on PC vs. console.
Since Origin, Steam, etc don't really release sales numbers its tough to find anything to go off of, and I its hard to believe that only a few hundred thousand people bought BF3 and Skryim. Especially with Skyrim having over 300,000 people playing at the same time on Steam.
I found a blog that deals with some numbers, I guess some studies were done a couple years ago showing that 67% of PC gamers buy their games digitally.
Assuming that the number continues to grow, this guy assumed that 75% of PC gamers bought their games digitally. Then we arrive at these numbers.
BF3:
Quote
Xbox 360: 2.2 million
PlayStation 3: 1.5 million
PC: 500,000
If we follow that 75% of sales were made digitally the sales numbers look quite different:
Xbox 360: 2.2 million
PlayStation 3: 1.5 million
PC: 2 Million
Skyrim:
Quote
Xbox 360: 1,997.215
PS3: 969,454
PC: 555,554
Xbox 360: 1,997.215
PS3: 969,454
PC: 2,222,216
These numbers make a bit more sense when you compare them to the amount of people you see online.
