In a new interview with The Guardian, Battlefield 3 producer Patrick Liu has confirmed that DICE is still interested in developing new Battlefield Bad Company titles.

"We haven't killed Bad Company," Liu said, "but we can only make so many games. Be patient. There might be something else coming up."

If a new game does come, don't expect it to be next year. According to Liu, DICE isn't aiming to have a Battlefield game every year.

"We don't have any plans to make Battlefield an annual title," he said. "We want to make it ourselves. We don't want anyone else doing it, and no studio can make an annual franchise by themselves. Well, the sports titles can, but they're a very different breed."

Liu also added that DICE is interested in exploring new downloadable games similar to Battlefield 1943.

"That kind of downloadable game is something we're very keen on," he said. "Battelefield 1943 was kind of a disruptive game when it came out; there weren't really any other shooters. XBLA games were very different then. Nowadays there are a lot of big triple A games on Arcade. I'd like to believe we started that trend. I like the whole idea of transforming something as complex as Battlefield into something much more accessible with only very small tweaks to the gameplay mechanics."

For now, DICE is still focused on preparing for the launch of Battlefield 3, as well as planning content for after the release.

"There's a still a lot of work to do," Liu said. "And the launch is just the start really. We'll then be releasing more content, tweaking and balancing the game. We have a team dedicated to servicing the game after launch."

DICE have posted on the Battlefield blog with a list of issues that the beta has thrown up which they say will be addressed in the full release of Battlefield 3.

First up, there will be “improved squad functionality in the retail game (including but not limited to): the ability to create squads prior to launching into a game, sticking with your squad when joining a game and continuing together through future games (If team balance on the server allows it), inviting friends to a squad and changing squads once in game.” Hooray!

Sensibly, we’ll also be able to access the settings menu from the deployment screen. That means no more finding a quiet spot to hide while tweaking graphics or control options. Issues with “terrain stability” and “falling into the map” on Operation Metro “has been fixed for the beta via a server side update” as well.

Addressing complaints about hit detection, DICE say that this is a server code issue that should be improved by the time Battlefield hits shelves later this month. They say that other bugs like one that stops people from running will also be fixed.

Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad has had broken experience and achievements since it launched, among a number of other problems. In a message to customers today, Tripwire admits, “…We’ve not done as well as we would have liked in the most important area to us – the happiness of all of our customers. To put it bluntly, the game had a rough launch. We’ve been working diligently since launch to get these issues sorted and have made great progress fixing issues with matchmaking, VOIP, and stability as well as improving performance. The final major area that we’ve been working on is stats, player progression and ranking.”

Because players were wrongly credited for Audie Murphy-levels of heroism, Tripwire has decided to globally reset the stats for the game.

As I say farewell to my hundreds of undeserved kills and phantom sniper shots, Tripwire explains its position. “We have now fixed all of the major issues with the stats system and released an update yesterday to address these issues. Due to the problems with stats and players either earning stats and achievements that they didn’t actually earn or earning stats at many times the intended rate, we are going to have to do a global reset of all stats for the game. This means all achievements, stats and player progression will be rolled back as if all players were new. This was not an easy decision for us to make, but one we felt we needed to do to preserve the integrity of the stats and ranking system, and to provide all of the players the best experience with the game over the long term.”

Since this is going to erase a lot of progress, Tripwire have made the next few weeks a “double experience period” so players can quickly rank up to the levels they would have achieved if the experience system had not been broken. Tripwire has also created an achievement, “In B4 Reset” for those who play during this period, and hope to give some future rewards to people with this achievement.

It’s not all bad news, however. Red Orchestra 2 is hands-down the biggest success Tripwire has ever had: “Within 2 days of the launch of the game it had surpassed the lifetime revenue of the original Red Orchestra that has been selling for over 5 years. The pre-sales and launch week sales of the game broke all company records, even beating out our hit game Killing Floor by a three-fold margin.”
