Today Valve officially announced that the popular Gun Game mod for Counter-Strike will be getting reworked for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The new mode is called Arsenal, and will further break down into "Arsenal: Arms Race" and "Arsenal: Demolition."

The new modes add eight maps, and offer players a different pace from the standard Counter-Strike multiplayer. Also noteworthy, Valve is working on Arsenal Mode with the creators of the original mod. Michael Barr, project lead of Gun Game stated, "We are excited that Valve reached out and is working with us to ensure Arsenal Mode is the best version of Gun Game."

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive releases for PSN, PC, Mac and XBLA in early 2012.

Sony will have timed exclusivity for all Battlefield 3 downloadable content packs, DICE has confirmed.

According to DICE Jr. Product Manager Tommy Rydling, all packs will be available to PS3 gamers one week early.

"You'll be happy to know that beginning with our first expansion pack Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand (to be released later this year), all full-blown upcoming expansion packs for the game will appear one week early exclusively on PS3, brought to you by Sony," Rydling said.

The Back to Karkand pack was announced earlier this year. Rydling describes it as "a themed expansion pack containing four of the most loved maps from Battlefield 2, boldly reimagined in the Frostbite 2 engine. It also features new weapons and vehicles, unique in-game dog tags, new persistence, as well as new Trophies

Here’s a grumble: we’ve still not got an announcement for when Renegade Ops will launch on PC. Gamers who’ve preordered it via Steam say that they received a message saying it would unlock tomorrow, which is useful-ish. But it’s been out on the consoles for over a week already.

I’m sad about the situation, because Renegade Ops is seriously entertaining. Not knowing when we can play it on PC is driving me crackers.

So: Renegade Ops. It’s a top down shooter in which you drive a little buggy around forests and hills, blowing stuff up. Hard. Everything about Renegade Ops is overcharged starting with the tech, which is just way too ambitious for this type of game. It’s powered by the Just Cause 2 engine – which lets everything explode with a kind of overbaked physics that leaves you grinning. The plot, driven by over-the-top comic book cutscenes features a lunatic supervilllain nuking a city as an opening gambit, and gets stupider from there. The feel of the buggies is beautifully judged; they bounce all over the hills and steppes like little toys – it reminds me a little of the old Micro Machine games.

And it’s perfect for the PC. Why?

I think it’s the best LAN party game we’ve seen on the PC for years. It’s got up to four player co-op that can be played online or over a LAN. Each player takes one of the Renegades, and with it a special ability. One of them can turn into a shield and bounce rockets away, another can drop airstrikes. There’s persistant progression and with it, decent replay value too. As you play you’ll gain points that can be put into a very simple talent tree.

I’ve loved playing Renegade Ops on console, and will shortly mount a campaign to make it the Official PC Gamer lunchtime game of choice. I realise I’m facing an uphill battle in this, given the Diablo 3 beta and our ongoing obsession with SupCom.

There’s a four-pack available on Steam here for £20. If you’re hosting a LAN party this weekend, you should definitely consider it. Just don’t be sad if it doesn’t come out for another few weeks.

Max Payne 3 is fully in keeping with its predecessors’ noir sensibilities, promises Rockstar’s VP of product development, Jeronimo Barrera, in an interview with GameSpot.

“For us, noir is not about a place (and if it were, that place would surely be Los Angeles, not New York) but about a particular visual style and a kind of story and characterization telling that has a certain hard-boiled cynicism, plenty of twists, and a sense of decay and depravity.”

Fans of the series have been wary about the new Max Payne game ever learning that much of the game occurs in sunny, verdant South America rather than than the dark, nightmarish New York that defined Remedy’s vision. Barrera, however, argues that it is the other iconic elements of the Max Payne series that made the first two games classics.

“Throughout development, we have always worked to maintain and evolve the elements that have made the Max Payne series so beloved and so groundbreaking. Through bullet time, Max Payne brought the gunplay of Hong Kong action movies into games in a way that had never been done before. This was in many ways more of a key element of Max even than its noir styling…its incredible movie-style action. And we have really worked hard to evolve this into something that feels incredibly visceral and fresh.”

He continues, “It wasn’t just the gameplay that was unique and new: Max’s iconic internal monologue and the use of graphic novel cutscenes were also signature elements of the game. All these things are present in some way or other in Max Payne 3, along with several other elements from the original games.”

It’s an illuminating interview, as Barrera explains what Max has been up to since the credits rolled on Max Payne 2, and what the São Paulo setting offers the story. It also underscores the difficulty in creating a third game in a series that always had such a distinct style
