Once you try out mumble you pretty much have to switch, the change is so glaring when we go between mumble to vent.

Hey switch. How does the multi work in terraria?? Is it just server based? Or can I start a brand new world and you can join?

I just don't want to jump into some shit where everythig has been done. I want to start fresh.

you connect to the other persons IP. and the person who hosts the world chooses what world they go into. the characters have their stuff no matter what world they go to. think of it as diablo where the server changes but the player keeps all of his stuff/skills etc
