World Ends – No Wait, The Other Thing: Duke Nukem Forever Goes Gold
Posted 05/24/2011 at 7:07pm | by Nathan Grayson of MaxPC

The recent rapture stir may have left its biggest advocate with a Rocky sized helping of egg on his face, but that's because he failed to take one thing into account: the world can't end until Duke Nukem Forever comes out. Now, though, it seems that Duke's finally ready to emerge from his dressing room and clear the way for zombies, robots, manticores, or whatever else is planning to swiftly and brutally remove us from this earth. That's right. No doubting it this time. Duke Nukem Forever is 100 percent complete. It's gone gold.

"Duke Nukem Forever is the game that was once thought to be unshippable, and yet here we are, on the precipice of history,” said 2K president Christoph Hartmann in a press release. “Today marks an amazing day in the annals of gaming lore, the day where the legend of Duke Nukem Forever is finally complete and it takes that final step towards becoming a reality.”

Now all that's left is a short (nearly non-existent, in Duke Time) wait until June 10, and then you'll be able to kick ass and creatively allude to gum even though the world said you'd never be able to. It's quite inspirational, really. So then, final roll call: The King's returning. Will you be rolling out the dollar-shaped welcome mat?

Age of Conan Smashes Subscription Fees, Goes Free-to-Play
Posted 05/25/2011 at 6:38pm | by Nathan Grayson

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that free-to-play is the future of MMOs. Hell, you don't even need a normal, fully clothed person for that little hop-step of mental gymnastics. Case in point: Even colossal, loincloth-clad barbarians are doing it now. Following in the footsteps of Champions Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Everquest II, and pretty much every other MMO not named “World of Warcraft,” Age of Conan is casting aside its mandatory subscription fee.

"The time is right for Age of Conan now as we recognised the opportunity presented by the increased profile of the license, with the new Conan movie coming out this Fall," executive producer Craig Morrison told Eurogamer.

"This is done by allowing free players to most of the original content, and having the expanded content as premium content. So free players will have access to all the original levelling quests and outdoor playfields that take them all the way to level 80."

Expansions and bonus items, then, will drive you before them and hear the lamentations of your bank account – but they're far from required.

To go along with its shiny new business model, the game's also snagging a snazzy new nametag: Age of Conan: Unrated. When the revamp launches (cue movie announcer voice) “this summer,” two new solo story based dungeons will come along for the ride. Meanwhile, later this year, the game will see a full adventure pack chock full of characters from the upcoming masterstroke in realistic barbarian cinema. Will there be Matrix leaning and gratuitous slow-mo? We can only hope.
