I myself don't have my windows 7 connected to the internet so there is that for my security issues.

King Atrhur shared some good stuff there though I think his advice will do well for upgrading. Seems legit. Would consider it myself if I needed to do so.

1 note I do want to mention, diablo 2 on my windows 7 computer loads full screen, looks nice, plays nice. For the life of me I cannot get diablo 2 to play like it did back in the day besides on windows 7. I can get it close and projected on other screens pretty well, but as for the desktop it isn't what it used to be. Just my experience there. You might have issues playing games.

Hope you best of luck.

That's what I read, is some older software may screw up the upgrade... should I uninstall games like warcraft 3 and diablo 2 and any other software prior to upgrading?

Pro has more options and home is limited, also same price.
You want to fresh install always when moving to a new OS.

Yeah but maybe think that others do...
Also your system isn't secure just cause its not connected online.
Infected flash drives and files moved over still put you at risk among other things.

By fresh install, you mean wipe the whole hard drive before installing Windows 10?

Guess I may need to buy some google cloud to actually back up then.

Yes, depending on how much data you talking may be wiser to partition the drive or buy an external drive/usb drive.
Cloud storage is a monthly fee.

talking about 500 GB worth... I deleted a lot of other stuff.

Is it possible to pay for the storage for a month, upload everything from the hard drive, install windows 10 after a hard drive wipe, then re-download all the data, then cancel the cloud?

My main PC needs to be upgraded from Windows 7, but I've never upgraded an operating system, I've only gotten new computers or built one fresh. I'm not as knowledgeable when it comes to this.

I wasn't going to bother backing up the PC because I do not have a spare hard drive other than the other empty 500 GB HDD that's on my PC. Worst case is I lose all the files and then reinstall the games I want to play, I do not have any files I care about enough to justify buying another hard drive just to back it up.

What I need to know is if it is as easy as going to the store to buy a Windows 10 disc, inserting it, and just following the on screen instructions? Or are there a bunch of other things I should be doing to prep?

Or you can just do it for free... legally.

/e You can also do a clean install using this method, as well. Just use AIDA64 to get you Windows 7 product key, then...

At this option choose: Create installation media (...) for another PC.

After Windows 10 is finished installing, connect to the internet and open Settings > Windows Update > Activation and the PC will be activated with a digital license. You can also enter your Windows 7 or Windows 8.x product key and activate Windows 10 if the device is not already activated.
