I would do raid 6, yes u gotta have more drives but better redundancy. If you want to go the cloud way, find a storage server, with a decent CPU and lote of storage

I pay 15USD monthly for, quad core, 16gb ram, 5.5tb HD, 1gb up/down. 20TB bandwidth, I can eliminate the bandwidth limit by upgrading my storage from 6TB to 10TB but so far I'm good on my storage. I download let friends us Plex and me. Then after a month clear out some space and download more.

Also recommend if u go towards cloud/dedicated/vp servers. Look into quick box. Makes life easy

Plex can stream files on original quality or it can transcode to a lesser quality - depends on the bandwidth and processing power that you have available. But no, the quality of the audio/video is not reduced by virtue of putting the file in cloud storage and streaming remotely.

I used to buy huge hard drives, but it gets to be a bit too much to handle in the long run. Once my library got to about ~10TB or so I started to realize that I don't want to ever lose all of that data, so I needed to buy more hdd storage to have redundancy. Also, rebuilding an array of that size when a drive fails can take a long ass time, so the whole thing becomes a huge pain in the ass. Plus, the server wasn't actually at my house since I don't have a fiber connection - I was borrowing some space at my brother's house where I had my server setup. So for me it just wasn't practical to continue with such a setup. When everything is in the cloud I literally don't have to worry about it, even if the cost comes out to be a bit higher (though don't discount the extra power costs of a local rack mount server with 24 thread cpus that have to transcode all this media).

Ahem... so how do you share your library with friends?? Movies for fg trades?

This seems like a good and cheap options if you don't have multiple users on the server.

I let my whole discord and few friends use it. There are probably 3-4 streams at a time going. During peak hours

Main thing is anime and movies at 1080p but Plex can scale it down depending on ur bandwidth.

Not bad at all, a very cheap solution indeed. I do have 15 on mine during peak hours :)
link your provider. Honestly I can't see how they can turn a profit with 15$ for those specs. It's 180$ a year. Would take them to long time to even get the money in on hardware, plus they would need to pay taxes, electricity and salary.

Heztner is how u spell it I think, do the bid on server for cheap deals. I watched it for a week till I got my deal

It's reused hardware so it's all profit

Just FYI, the server is in Germany but no one really has problems but some on my west coast friends in US, but I have a VPN in alanta, ga and it fixes their problems so it seems to be routing issues some times

I'm from Denmark so the ping would be great to Germany.
Man you must have been lucky with that deal.

This is the cheapest server with at least 5TB+
€ 40.96 per month
Intel Core i7-2600 (CPU-B 8307)
2x 4 TB
16 GB RAM

And if I need something matching my needs it would be 86.25€

My server cost with 8c/16t, 16GB, 20TB WD Red was 1075€, (has resale value). And I get a total of 1450€ a year from the users :D
