except you didnt say "how do you mean?" .. you said "how do you mean BY THIS"
which just sounds and is .. completely incorrect ..
You may have been mislead into thinking to yourself, well you didn't say How do you mean?
You said "How do you mean by this?" !!
Quote (Cheeya @ 17 Jul 2014 13:23)
You used the phrase out of context and its incorrect.
Maybe in your excitement, or a false belief that EternalxLove agreeing with you would magically make you correct you seem to have missed out when I explained.

This would mean the "by this" is clarifying that I am asking about his quote, and not someone else who posted in the thread. You could almost see it as me only asking him "How do you mean?", but I added in the by this so he would be 100% sure I was talking to him. Even though I already quoted him. I like to be extra precise when talking to someone, so they know what the deal is.

quoting me provided more than enough info to show you were talking to me.

Finally for someone who claims to never have heard the phrase in their life, you seem to know everything about it, and how it's used. You weren't only referring to the "by this" attached at the end, or you would have mentioned it. Instead you focused on the how.

I have literally never heard anyone say that in my life. Im going to agree to disagree. "What do you mean" = full explanation "What do you mean by that" = minor clarification. Of course you are more than welcome to find a grammar source corroborating your explanation.

^^^This is what I was asking you to elaborate on. Furthermore, as you've clearly demonstrated your inability to comprehend information clearly laid out for you, I retract my question.
