I have literally never heard anyone say that in my life. Im going to agree to disagree. "What do you mean" = full explanation "What do you mean by that" = minor clarification. Of course you are more than welcome to find a grammar source corroborating your explanation.

Not sure what kind of source you're looking for here. I've read articles in the Harvard Review of Philosophy that have used the term.

how do you mean?

Yeah but grammatically that doesnt apply here. Unless you truly didnt understand HOW to join a new guild it would be "what do you mean".

The above example is asking how they would reconsider their position. If you REALLY asked me how you would join a new guild Ive got to laugh at you for being extremely noobish in this game...

If you look at the definition again:
used when you want someone to explain what they have just said

You would see that I was asking you to elaborate on the following:

Quote (Cheeya @ 15 Jul 2014 12:29)

get a new guild.... its not that hard to find a decent one to join ...

Thank you for your well thought out argument, and relevant evidence. It's always nice to see someone, who has a plethora of knowledge and credentials subject-related, get in there and help everyone out. However, I believe you may have missed that in my original post I quoted Cheeya. This would mean the "by this" is clarifying that I am asking about his quote, and not someone else who posted in the thread. You could almost see it as me only asking him "How do you mean?", but I added in the by this so he would be 100% sure I was talking to him. Even though I already quoted him. I like to be extra precise when talking to someone, so they know what the deal is. Make sense Eternal?

quoting me provided more than enough info to show you were talking to me. You used the phrase out of context and its incorrect. Like I said you wouldnt ask "how" unless you didnt understand how to get a new guild. Again if thats the case you dont know very much about this game then...

Your friend here has provided no factual proof or evidence that the wording was incorrect. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however this should hold no bearing on our conversation.

You may have been mislead into thinking to yourself, well you didn't say How do you mean?
You said "How do you mean by this?" !!

Maybe in your excitement, or a false belief that EternalxLove agreeing with you would magically make you correct you seem to have missed out when I explained.

Finally for someone who claims to never have heard the phrase in their life, you seem to know everything about it, and how it's used. You weren't only referring to the "by this" attached at the end, or you would have mentioned it. Instead you focused on the how.

^^^This is what I was asking you to elaborate on. Furthermore, as you've clearly demonstrated your inability to comprehend information clearly laid out for you, I retract my question.

^ Wall of text. Ill adress the last ones because you seem to be in the mood for +1s....

I said Ive never heard anyone say this in my life... this meaning I have never heard someone speak with such bad grammar as you have just used. As Ive said 2-3 times into this if you seriously dont know how to find a new guild you are a noob. Seriously even my trade mules have been invited into countless guilds. Your usage of "how do you mean" is incorrect and thats really all there is to it.

edit: seriously though go debate grammar elsewhere this is a forum for a GAME not your ability (or lack there of) to speak with proper grammar
