Kabam has said they plan on making "almost everything" currently purchasable with gold also purchasable with fame. Not sure if that's still the case, or if backpacks would be included (this was said before backpacks came out), but I'm holding off on buying backpacks for sure. As is, I think the way I'd buy storage space is:

1: Vault chests until max.
2: Char slots until 14 (one of each class) -- not for storage, but as something to spend items on rather than hoard them.
3: 1 additional char slot for use as mule
4: 2 backpacks for mule character
5: Goto 3

I just don't think backpacks are convenient enough to justify 500 gold (for the maximum of 2 per char) on something you lose when you die. Dyes at least have "I look like a badass" factor.

Can't forget, when they make everything purchasable with fame, it will also be the opposite. Thinks you can buy with fame will be purchasable with gold, hence Ammy's and shit.

I'll say that I'm pretty impressed with the backpack.

I thought for sure it would only be an additional four slots underneath your existing eight.

Gotta love the added risk of dying with 14x+ stat potions rattling around your inventory

Trading large quantities will be nicer too, provided there aren't any bugs attached to trading directly out of your backpack.
