The patch introduced monster powers, which makes the game as challenging as you want it to be really (tougher is more xp/drops). Also they doubled Legendary drop rates, and made made it much easier to find your own upgrades (still rare if you have good gear).
D3 is still far from being on any Tier close to D2, and far from being the best game I've ever played. But they are honestly making good improvements.
/e O yea they also introduced key system like D2 has. The reward with the Organ's is a Hellfire Ring, instead of Torch.
On the note of TL2, some guys from my guild (in realm) played it for like a week and I just listened in. Didn't really sound that interesting, BL2 on the other hand, awesome.
TL2 is pretty fun, it's got a lot of similarities with D2. From what I've seen it's much closer to D2 than D3 is. Like you said about D3, it's not D2 but if you're like me (and I assume you are) and have done everything possible there is to do with D2, it's fun. Feels like home but still a refreshing change of pace. Plus I got it as a gift.
As for Borderlands 2, I dunno, I haven't played it but it doesn't look different enough from BL1 to justify spending $60 on it, possibly $50 or whatever on XBox Live, and whatever the DLC costs. A friend of mine IRL who bought the game has pretty much said the same. I'll probably get it used, when it's like $20 (in 50 years).
