if they both agree to null right now would the "not allowed to challenge anyone" timer start? or do they have to wait the full 5 days?

If they agree to null it, the other ranks must be given the opportunity to challenge either of them if they choose to

they would go on the 48 hour cooldown and be able to be challenged, but if no one did they could rechallenge eachother after the cooldown on Friday or whatever and still get it done this weekend?

I know when I nulled ours I waited 48 hours before reissuing.
