Idea that Russia would be invading sovereign nation, which was protected by the Budapest memorandum thus (USA/China/France/GB) and trying to take over that country was ludicrous in 2013 as well.
Its just a next logical point in russian foreign policy - to raise the stakes even higher and shatter NATOs reputation by invasion of Baltic states. The blueprint of steering up reasoning for said needed "special operation" is already laid out in Ukraine, just will need some modifications.

It still baffles my mind how you guys claim that Russia could conquer the whole continent after what we have witnessed in Ukraine the past few months. They have been waging war against a smaller country and in 3.5 months, they have managed to conquer less than 10% of their victim's territory. (Russia currently controls slightly over 20% of Ukraine's territory, but most of that was already held by Russia before the outbreak of the war.) Yet you guys pretend like they could waltz into Europe and just casually take over 100 times more territory in the blink of an eye while the over 500k professional soldiers of the European countries sit idly by with their thumbs up their ass.

EU is tons of people, but not really tons of military, and only very few countries have nukes and they wont use them unless in their OWN self defense.

Already said in my other post that NATO is a soft agreement, that countries will assist each other. Putin considers NATO a bluff, an alliance that doesnt really exist much.

Thats the point, those are 3 NATO countries that Putin knows full well are overextended appendixs of the NATO, that very few Nato countries if any would risk going nuclear over, that would fall in a matter of days in an event of Russian invasion
- They are right on Russian borders (which means even if GB/USA reacted they would need time to get their forces there and by that time russia would control those states)
- They have no military and 10-15k NATO troops would do little to deter such invasion taking place
- This would be the very chance for Putin (who is dying in the next 10 years) to shatter NATO unity/reputation and maybe even the alliance itself depending on how other NATO states would react after - the very alliance he has been an opponent of, his entire life.
